How to make shampoo from Soap Nuts

Are you looking for a natural shampoo... an alternative to the chemical goop typically sold in stores? SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE and PROPYLENE GLYCOL are just two of the many chemicals often used in shampoo. If you do an internet search on them, you'd probably think twice before using shampoos made with these again. And these are only two of many chemicals you are exposed to when you use typical shampoos sold in stores. There is an alternative natural product that has been used by Asians and Native Americans for thousands of years. It's made from SOAP NUTS, sometimes called soap berries, and it's very easy to make. Soap nuts actually grow on several kinds of trees or shrubs that are members of the Lychee family. You can easily buy soap nuts online through various websites. Once you have some soap nuts on hand: If they have not had the seeds removed, you will need to remove them, but we buy ours with the seeds already removed, so we will skip that step. Then, you boil three berries for 15 to 30 minutes to release the natural soapy material called saponin. You should adjust the number you use based on the amount of hair you have and how oily it is. Three is just right for us here. Pour the liquid from the pot into a blender. Turn the blender on and watch the solution turn into a thick foam. The volume in the blender increases as it is blended, so be sure not to use too much liquid to start with. Try to fill the blender no more than half full. Take the foamy liquid to the bathtub or shower and use liberally as shampoo. If there is any leftover, you can save it in the refrigerator for a few days, but not much longer because it will spoil. It's organic material after all. It may also separate in the fridge, but should still be useable. One note of caution. Soap Nut Shampoo really stings the eyes, so do your best to avoid getting it in them. If you get some there, it should not result in any kind of longterm damage, but you will experience discomfort or irritation for a while.
